WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS TOUR
Join us on this short Reykjanes Midnight sun tour to see the largest mud pool in Iceland, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland and the bridge between two continents.
Iceland’s high level of geothermal activity provides it with an enormous amount of unique and fascinating landscape features. One such feature that we will visit on our tour is Gunnuhver, the largest mud pool in the country, measuring 20m wide. Here, mud heated by the underground geothermal activity boils up and mixes with water on the surface. The acidity of the mixture transforms the surrounding lava rock into clay.
Following our visit to the mud pools we will head to the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, known as Reykjanesviti. The working lighthouse still provides guidance for boats around Reykjavík and Keflavík. The building was first constructed in 1878, but was levelled by an earthquake just eight years later. The modern structure was completed in 1929 and stands at 31m (102ft), with a focal plane of 73m (240ft) above sea level.
Next, we will cross ‘The Bridge Between Continents’. The bridge’s modest size belies the fact that it spans the gap between two major tectonic plates. Crossing the bridge takes you from the North American to the Eurasian plates, and is a truly humbling experience.
This concise tour manages to fit in some of the best sights Iceland has to offer, and it shouldn’t be missed.
